The Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, Rt Hon Sheriff Oborevwori has called for unity in the fight against crime in the country, saying that the ugly monster must be tackled headlong and uprooted.
In his welcome address at the resumption of plenary from the Christmas and New Year break, the Speaker who is also the National Deputy Chairman of the Conference of Speakers of state legislatures of Nigeria, expressed concern about the increasing wave of crimes in the country.
“My dear Honourable Colleagues, I am delighted to welcome you back to plenary from the Christmas and New Year break. I thank God Almighty for his grace and mercy for seeing us through to the end of year 2021. I do hope you took advantage of the holiday to engage your constituents”, he said.
According to him; “Distinguished colleagues, we are all painfully aware of the increasing wave of crimes in our country. This is an ugly monster that must be tackled headlong and uprooted by our unity as a people. During the break, our colleague, member representing Ughelli South State Constituency, Hon. Izeze Rume Yakubu Reuben was attacked by unknown gunmen in Warri on the 24th of December, 2021. By the special grace of God, he survived the attack”.
As a House, he said, they have a duty to make laws for the peace, order and good government of the State, adding that; “Our primary purpose in government is the security and welfare of the people. Therefore, in collaboration with the Executive Arm of Government, we will ensure that everyone who is up in arms against our people is quickly brought to justice wherever they are in the State”.
“Dear colleagues, before the break, we passed a number of strategic Bills into laws that have been assented to by the Governor, His Excellency, Senator Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa. We were able to achieve this feat as a result of your cooperation and support. I therefore wish to solicit your continuous support and commitment for the remainder of the Session”, the Speaker said.
He added that; “As a follow up to the above, may I crave the special understanding of Chairmen and Members of Committees as always to double your efforts and report to plenary all outstanding referrals. All Committees’ secretariat must therefore be up and doing in order to achieve this goal”.
Rt Hon Oborevwori used the opportunity to congratulate management staff of the House for their successful Retreat just as he expressed gratitude to his colleagues for their continuous support to the leadership of the House.
In his words; “On this note, may I thank my ever reliable colleagues for your continuous support to the leadership of the House. Your hard work has earned the House as the most vibrant House of Assembly in the country. Let us maintain the pace and work even harder this year to set a record that will be difficult for our successors to beat. Once again, I welcome you back to plenary and I wish you all a happy and prosperous new year”.
